MUST-SEE: Albon’s Q3 hopes in Baku blown by bizarre incident as Williams leave fan attached to car

Formula 1

Williams impressed with a double Q3 showing in Saturday’s qualifying session at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, but there was one element of their performance that made headlines for the wrong reasons.

After Alex Albon and rookie Franco Colapinto both brilliantly made it through to the pole position shootout, the Thai-British driver was sent out for his final run with an airbox fan still attached.

In a highly unusual sight, Albon stopped at the side of the track to remove the fan himself and then throw it toward the marshals, but the delay he experienced meant there was not enough time to get another lap in.

Colapinto and Albon still finished the session in high-flying P9 and P10 places, but there will be a debrief for Williams to run through – as well as a trip to the stewards to explain what happened from their perspective.
